How Often Should Nantwich Businesses Renew First Aid Certificates?

How long EFAW and FAW certificates last, what happens when they expire, and how Nantwich businesses can avoid gaps in cover.

It is one of the most common questions we get from Nantwich business owners. You trained your first aider two years ago, or maybe three, and you are not entirely sure whether their certificate is still valid. You might have a vague memory that it lasts three years, but you are not certain. And you are definitely not sure what happens if it lapses.

This post clears it up. We will explain how long each first aid certificate lasts, what happens when it expires, how to plan your renewals so you never have a gap in cover, and why staying on top of this matters more than you might think.

We are PCT Services, and we deliver Qualsafe Awards accredited first aid training from our training centre at First Floor, 2 Queen Street in Northwich, about a 15 minute drive from Nantwich. We also deliver on-site training at workplaces across the area.

How long do first aid certificates last?

The answer depends on which course your first aider completed.

Emergency First Aid at Work (1 Day) certificates are valid for three years from the date of issue. After three years, the certificate expires and your first aider must retake the course to maintain their qualification.

First Aid at Work (3 Day) certificates are also valid for three years. The same rule applies. Once the three years are up, the certificate is no longer valid.

There is no grace period. The HSE is clear on this. A lapsed certificate means your first aider is no longer qualified, and if they are your only trained first aider, your business is non-compliant from the day the certificate expires.

What happens when a certificate expires?

Nothing dramatic happens on the day itself. Nobody comes to check. No alarm goes off. But from that point forward, your business does not have a qualified first aider, and that creates two problems.

The first is a legal problem. Under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, every employer must provide adequate first aid arrangements. If your risk assessment says you need a trained first aider and your only first aider's certificate has lapsed, you are not meeting that requirement. If the HSE inspects your workplace or if there is an incident and questions are asked, a lapsed certificate is a clear failure of compliance.

The second is a practical problem. First aid skills are perishable. Research shows that confidence and competence in CPR, choking management, and other emergency techniques decline significantly within months of training. After three years without a refresher, your first aider may remember the theory but struggle with the practical execution when it matters. Renewing on time is not just about the certificate. It is about making sure the skills are still sharp.

How to avoid gaps in cover

The simplest approach is to book the renewal course before the current certificate expires. We recommend booking at least two to three months before the expiry date. This gives you time to find a suitable course date, arrange cover at work, and avoid the last-minute scramble that often results in a gap.

If you have multiple first aiders in your Nantwich business, stagger their renewal dates. If you trained everyone at the same time three years ago, they all expire at the same time, and you could find yourself with no qualified first aiders while they retrain. Staggering means that at least one person always has a current certificate.

Keep a simple record of every first aider in your business. Their name, the course they completed, the date they completed it, the certificate number, and the expiry date. Check this list every quarter. Set a reminder in your calendar for three months before each expiry. This takes five minutes to set up and saves you from the kind of compliance headache that catches business owners off guard.

Do you retake the same course or a shorter refresher?

Under the current regulations, first aiders must retake the full course when their certificate expires. For Emergency First Aid at Work, that is one day. For First Aid at Work, that is two days for the requalification (rather than the full three days for initial training).

Some business owners assume there is a quick half-day refresher that extends the certificate. There is not. The requalification courses exist specifically because the regulatory bodies recognise that first aid skills need to be fully revisited, not just topped up. The practical content is the same, and your first aider gets a full new certificate valid for another three years.

What about annual refreshers?

While the certificate itself lasts three years, the HSE strongly recommends that first aiders receive annual refresher training to keep their skills current. This is not a regulatory requirement, and it does not extend the certificate, but it does ensure that your first aiders stay confident and capable between requalification courses.

Annual refreshers are typically shorter sessions that focus on the core practical skills: CPR, choking, recovery position, and the use of an AED. They are a good investment, especially for businesses where first aid emergencies are rare and the skills might not be practised otherwise.

The courses

Emergency First Aid at Work (1 Day) covers CPR, choking, bleeding, burns, shock, and the other core emergencies. It costs £75 plus VAT per person, groups can be up to 12, and it is Qualsafe Awards accredited. This is the course most Nantwich businesses need for their designated first aider.

First Aid at Work (3 Day) covers everything in the one day course plus head injuries, spinal injuries, chest injuries, eye injuries, poisoning, and more. It costs £195 plus VAT per person and is for businesses with higher-risk environments or larger workforces. The requalification is two days.

Both courses are available at our training centre at First Floor, 2 Queen Street in Northwich, about a 15 minute drive from Nantwich. We run scheduled courses throughout the year with live dates on our course pages. We also deliver on-site at Nantwich workplaces for groups.
