Congleton has a strong working identity. Garages, plumbers, electricians, builders, mechanics, hairdressers, pub staff, cafe workers, and shop assistants make up a significant part of the local workforce. These are hands-on, practical jobs where you are on your feet, dealing with customers, solving problems, and getting things done. They are also the jobs where mental health is least likely to be talked about.

That is not because people in these roles do not struggle. They do. Anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, and financial worry affect tradespeople and service workers at the same rates as everyone else. The difference is that in these environments, there is often no language for it, no structure around it, and no expectation that it is something the workplace should address.

Mental health training changes that. Not by turning garages into therapy rooms, but by giving people the basic awareness and practical tools to recognise when a colleague is struggling and to have a straightforward, supportive conversation about it.

We are PCT Services, and we deliver accredited mental health training from our training centre at First Floor, 2 Queen Street in Northwich, about a 20 minute drive from Congleton. We also deliver on-site training at workplaces across the area.

Why trades and service businesses need this

The statistics are sobering. Construction and the trades consistently have some of the highest rates of suicide of any industry in the UK. Hospitality workers report higher levels of stress and anxiety than almost any other sector. Retail and service workers deal with the pressure of customer-facing roles while often working irregular hours on low pay. These are not abstract numbers. This is the awareness course, and it is designed for everyone. It is a Qualsafe Awards accredited Level 2 qualification that covers what mental health is, how common conditions like anxiety, depression, and stress show up in a work setting, and how to have a supportive conversation with someone who is struggling.

It does not require anyone to become a counsellor or a therapist. It simply gives your team the knowledge to recognise the signs and the confidence to say something rather than looking the other way. In a garage, that might be the foreman pulling someone aside for a quiet word. In a pub, it might be the landlady asking a member of staff if they are okay. In a salon, it might be a stylist noticing that their colleague is not themselves.

It costs £95 plus VAT per person, the certificate is valid for three years, and groups can be up to 16. A full team can complete it in a single day without any previous training or experience.

Mental Health First Aid in the Workplace (2 Day)

This is the more in-depth course for the person in your business who will be the go-to for mental health support. It is a Level 3 qualification that covers how to spot early warning signs, how to have structured conversations, how to assess risk, how to signpost to professional services, and how to build a culture where asking for help is normalised.

In a Congleton trade business, this might be the business owner, the senior mechanic, or the site foreman. In a pub or restaurant, it might be the general manager. In a salon, it might be the owner or a senior stylist. The idea is that every team has at least one person who is trained to go beyond awareness and provide genuine first-line mental health support.

It costs £220 plus VAT per person, and the certificate is valid for three years.

What training actually looks like for these businesses
