Three hours. That is all it takes to learn the skills that could save your baby or toddler's life. Not a full day. Not a weekend course. Three hours of practical, hands on training that teaches you exactly what to do if your child chokes, stops breathing, has a burn, a convulsion, or any of the other emergencies that every parent hopes will never happen but needs to be ready for.

Most parents in Crewe will tell you they would do anything for their children. But when we ask how many have actually learnt infant CPR or how to deal with a choking baby, the answer is usually the same. They have not. Not because they do not care. Because they assumed they would never need to, or because they did not know this kind of training existed, or because they thought it would be expensive or time consuming.

It is neither. And it could be the most important three hours you ever spend.

We are PCT Services, and we run our Baby and Toddler First Aid course regularly at our training centre at First Floor, 2 Queen Street in Northwich, about a 25 minute drive from Crewe. Parents, grandparents, and carers come to us from Crewe and all across south Cheshire to learn these essential skills.

What three hours covers

The course focuses on the emergencies that are most common and most dangerous for babies and young children. These are not abstract medical scenarios. They are the things that happen in homes, in gardens, in kitchens, at mealtimes, and at bath time.

Choking is the one that comes up first in every course. Babies put everything in their mouths. Grapes, coins, small toys, buttons, pieces of food. The choking response is different in infants compared to older children, and the technique for clearing a blocked airway in a baby is something you need to learn properly and practise. On this course, you will do exactly that, using specially designed infant manikins.

You will learn infant and child CPR. If your baby stops breathing, you need to start CPR immediately. The ambulance might be ten minutes away. In those ten minutes, you are the only thing keeping your child alive. The course teaches you the correct technique, the right compression depth, the right ratio of breaths to compressions, and how to stay calm enough to do it properly.

Febrile convulsions are covered because they are one of the most frightening things a parent can witness. A child suddenly going rigid, shaking, and becoming unresponsive. The course teaches you what is happening, why it happens, and what to do, which is often less about intervention and more about keeping the child safe and staying calm until it passes.

Burns and scalds are a big one for toddlers. Hot drinks, hot water, radiators, ovens, hair straighteners. The course covers how to cool a burn correctly, what not to do, and when it is serious enough to need hospital treatment.

The course also covers allergic reactions and anaphylaxis, recognising the signs of meningitis, dealing with bleeding and wounds, and managing head injuries. Everything is practical and taught in plain language with no medical jargon.

Just £42

The course costs £42 per person. For the price of a family meal out, you learn skills that could save your child's life. You receive a certificate valid for one year, and groups are kept small at a maximum of 12 people, so there is plenty of time for questions and hands on practice.

You do not need any previous first aid experience. We start from scratch and make sure everyone leaves confident.

Who comes on this course?

All sorts of people from in and around Crewe. First time parents who want to feel ready before their baby starts weaning. Second or third time parents who realise they never got around to doing it with their first child. Grandparents who look after their grandchildren regularly and want to feel confident, especially when things have changed a lot since their own children were small.

We see couples who come together, which is great because it means both parents know what to do. We see groups of friends who had babies around the same time and book together. And we see people who received the course as a gift from someone who knew how valuable it would be.

This is not a professional qualification

Just to be clear, this is a personal course for parents, grandparents, and carers. It is not a formal qualification and it does not meet the requirements for childminders, nursery workers, or anyone who needs paediatric first aid for work. If you need a professional qualification, check our Paediatric First Aid page or our Emergency Paediatric First Aid page for Qualsafe Awards accredited courses that meet EYFS and Ofsted requirements.
