Being a grandparent is one of life's great joys. Spending time with your grandchildren, watching them grow, and building a relationship that is different from anything else. But it also comes with a quiet worry that many grandparents in Knutsford recognise. The worry that you are responsible for a small child and you are not quite sure what you would do if something went wrong.

When your own children were babies, you managed. You muddled through, you followed the advice of the day, and everything turned out fine. But that was twenty, thirty, maybe forty years ago. The guidance has changed. The techniques have changed. And the confidence you once had with babies may have faded along with the memory of sleepless nights and nappy changes.

If you look after your grandchildren regularly, whether that is every day while the parents work, a couple of afternoons a week, or the occasional weekend sleepover, this course is for you.

We are PCT Services, and we run our Baby and Toddler First Aid course at our training centre at First Floor, 2 Queen Street in Northwich, just a 15 minute drive from Knutsford.

Why grandparents are booking this course

We see more grandparents on our Baby and Toddler First Aid course than ever before, and the reasons are always the same. They love their grandchildren fiercely. They look after them regularly. And they want to know that if something happened, they would know exactly what to do.

The thing that has changed most since you raised your own children is the advice around choking, CPR, and managing emergencies in babies. The techniques are different. The guidance on what to do, and critically what not to do, has evolved based on decades of research. What you learnt in the 1980s or 1990s may not be what is recommended today.

For example, the advice on infant CPR has changed. The compression depth, the ratio of breaths to compressions, and the technique for managing the airway have all been updated. The back blows and chest thrusts for a choking baby follow specific protocols that may be different from what you remember. And the guidance on burns, febrile convulsions, and allergic reactions has all moved on.

None of this is about telling you that what you did before was wrong. It is about giving you the most current, evidence-based skills so that you can respond with confidence if your grandchild needs help.

What the course covers

The course focuses on the emergencies that are most common and most serious for babies and young children.

Choking is always the big one. You will learn the correct technique for clearing a blocked airway in a baby and in a toddler, and you will practise on specially designed infant manikins. By the end, the response will feel natural and you will know you can do it for real if you need to.

Infant and child CPR is covered step by step. You will practise until the technique is in your muscle memory. It is not something you want to be trying to remember from a book when your grandchild has stopped breathing.

The course covers burns and scalds, which are common when grandchildren visit homes that may not be fully child-proofed. Febrile convulsions, which are frightening to witness but manageable when you understand what is happening. Allergic reactions, which are increasingly common in children. Signs of meningitis. Head injuries from falls. And basic wound care for the everyday bumps that come with active toddlers.

Everything is practical, hands on, and taught in plain language by our experienced instructors.

Three hours, and you are done

The course lasts three hours and costs £42 per person. You receive a certificate valid for one year. Groups are small at a maximum of 12, so there is plenty of time for questions and individual practice. You do not need any previous first aid experience.

Three hours is manageable for anyone. It fits into an afternoon, and you leave with skills that could genuinely save a life.

Come with a friend

A lot of the grandparents we see book in pairs. Husband and wife coming together so they both know what to do. Friends who are all grandparents booking as a group so they can learn alongside each other. It makes for a more relaxed, sociable experience, and you can discuss the scenarios together afterwards.

If you are part of a community group, a social club, or a church group in Knutsford where several members are grandparents, booking a group session is a great option. We can accommodate up to 12 people, and everyone benefits from learning together.

This is not a professional course

This course is designed purely for personal use. It is for grandparents, parents, and family carers who want essential skills for their own families. If you need a formal paediatric first aid qualification for work, we run separate accredited courses. Check our Paediatric First Aid page or Emergency Paediatric First Aid page for those.
