If you run a dental practice or GP surgery in Wilmslow, BLS training is one of those things that needs to happen every single year. Not because you want it to. Because you have to. And because the day a patient collapses in your chair or your waiting room is the day when annual refreshers either pay off or they do not.
The thing about BLS is that the skills degrade quickly. Research shows that CPR quality drops significantly within months of training if the skills are not practised. That means the BLS course your receptionist did eighteen months ago might not be enough to save someone's life today. Annual refreshers are not bureaucracy. They are the difference between a team that responds instinctively and one that hesitates at the worst possible moment.
We are PCT Services, and we deliver Resuscitation Council UK aligned BLS training from our training centre at First Floor, 2 Queen Street in Northwich, about a 30 minute drive from Wilmslow. We also deliver on site at dental practices and GP surgeries across the area, which is the most popular option for Wilmslow healthcare settings.
Why dental practices need annual BLS
Dental practices have a unique risk profile. Your patients are in a reclined position, often with their mouth propped open, receiving treatment that can cause pain, anxiety, and stress. The combination of physical position, medication, and the anxiety that many patients feel creates conditions where medical emergencies are a real possibility.
Vasovagal syncope is the most common medical emergency in dental settings, but it is not the most dangerous. Anaphylaxis from local anaesthetics or latex, cardiac arrest triggered by the stress of treatment, respiratory emergencies in patients with asthma or COPD, and diabetic emergencies in patients who have fasted before their appointment are all scenarios that dental teams need to be prepared for.
When something goes wrong, the dental team is the first response. The ambulance might be ten minutes away. In those ten minutes, the quality of CPR, the speed at which someone gets the AED on the patient, and the confidence of the team in managing the airway can determine whether the patient walks out of the hospital or does not.
Every member of your dental team needs current BLS certification. The dentist, the dental nurses, the hygienist, the reception staff. Everyone. Because you cannot predict who will be closest when something happens.
Why GP surgeries need annual BLS
GP surgeries see a broad cross-section of the population, including patients with heart conditions, respiratory disease, diabetes, and other conditions that increase the risk of medical emergencies. A patient could deteriorate in the waiting room, during a consultation, or in the corridor.
The reception team is often the first to notice something is wrong. If a patient collapses at the front desk, the receptionist needs to start CPR immediately while someone grabs the AED and calls for the GP. Those first few minutes before the ambulance arrives are critical, and they depend entirely on the training and confidence of whoever is in the room.
Annual BLS refreshers keep those skills sharp for every member of the practice team, from the administrative staff to the practice nurses and GPs.
What our BLS course covers
Our BLS course is a two hour CPD certified session aligned with CSTF Level 2 standards. It covers adult CPR with correct hand placement, compression depth, and rate. It covers the use of an automated external defibrillator, including how to attach the pads, when to stand clear, and how to integrate AED use with ongoing CPR. And it covers the recovery position for an unconscious but breathing patient.
The course is entirely practical. Your team will practise CPR on manikins and work through realistic scenarios. Our instructors are experienced healthcare professionals who understand clinical environments and can relate the training to the specific situations your team might face.
Groups can be up to 14 people.

Basic Life Support Training (BLS)
This Basic Life Support course provides essential knowledge and practical skills to competently recognise a cardiac arrest and commence basic life support in adults, children and infants. It also covers safe application of an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator), how to use a pocket mask, administration of oxygen, and the initial assessment and management of anaphylaxis.

On site delivery for Wilmslow practices
The most practical option for dental practices and GP surgeries in Wilmslow is on site BLS training. We come to your premises, bring all the equipment, and run the two hour session in your staff room, waiting area, or wherever works best.
For dental practices, this typically means scheduling the training during a lunchtime closure or at the end of the day. The whole team trains together in a familiar environment, which means the scenarios feel real and the team builds confidence as a unit.
For GP surgeries, we can schedule around your appointment slots or run the session during a protected learning time slot. If you have staff on different shifts, we can run the session more than once on the same day to cover everyone.
On site delivery means no travel time for your staff, no need to close for longer than the two hour session, and training that happens in the setting where your team would actually need to use these skills.
CQC and GDC compliance
Both CQC and GDC expect healthcare teams to have current BLS training. CQC inspectors will check training records at care homes and GP surgeries. The GDC expects dental professionals to maintain competence in medical emergency management as part of their CPD requirements.
Having a clear annual BLS training schedule with documented attendance records demonstrates good governance and keeps you compliant. We can help you set up a rolling annual schedule so that BLS refreshers become a fixed part of your practice calendar.
Beyond BLS: eILS for clinicians
For the clinicians in your Wilmslow practice, our Immediate Life Support (eILS) course provides advanced skills beyond BLS. It covers the ABCDE approach to patient assessment, advanced airway management, and recognition of cardiac arrest rhythms. It costs £180 per person, lasts five hours with online pre-learning, and the certificate is valid for one year. Groups are a maximum of six.
The recommended approach is BLS annually for all staff and eILS for the lead clinicians. Check the Immediate Life Support page for dates.

Immediate Life Support Training (eILS)
The Immediate Life Support course is a specialised course designed to equip healthcare professionals with a variety of skills, from managing a deteriorating adult, identifying causes of deterioration and treating cardiorespiratory arrest in adults, to developing team leadership skills and understanding what it takes to be an effective team member in an emergency.
