Baby First Aid Skills Every Wilmslow Parent Should Know

A three-hour, £42 Baby and Toddler First Aid course for Wilmslow parents, grandparents and carers — practical, hands-on, and just 30 minutes from home.

You do not need a qualification to be a good parent. But there are a handful of skills that every parent should have, and knowing how to save your baby's life if they choke or stop breathing is right at the top of that list. It is not about being a medical professional. It is not about passing a test. It is about having the knowledge and the muscle memory to act in the moment when it matters most.

Most parents in Wilmslow would say they would do anything for their children. But if we asked you right now to demonstrate infant CPR, or to show us the correct technique for clearing a choking baby's airway, could you? If the answer is no, you are not alone. Most parents cannot. And it is not because they do not care. It is because nobody ever showed them.

That is what our Baby and Toddler First Aid course is for. Three hours of practical training that gives you the knowledge, not the qualification, just the knowledge, to handle the emergencies that every parent hopes will never happen.

We are PCT Services, and we run this course at our training centre at First Floor, 2 Queen Street in Northwich, about a 30 minute drive from Wilmslow.

Knowledge, not a qualification

We want to be really clear about what this course is. It is not a formal first aid qualification. It will not give you a certificate that qualifies you to work in a nursery or school. It is not designed for professionals. It is designed for you. For parents, grandparents, and anyone who looks after young children in their own family.

What it gives you is knowledge. The knowledge of what to do if your baby chokes on a piece of food. The knowledge of how to perform CPR on an infant. The knowledge of how to cool a burn correctly. The knowledge of what a febrile convulsion looks like and why it is not as dangerous as it appears. The knowledge of when to call 999 and what to tell them.

This is the kind of knowledge that you hope you never need to use. But if you do need it, nothing else in the world matters more.

What you will learn

The course covers the emergencies that are most common and most serious for babies and young children.

Choking is the skill parents are most desperate to learn, and it is the one you are most likely to need. The technique for a baby under one is completely different from the technique for a toddler, and both are different from what you would do for an adult. You will learn and practise both techniques on infant and child manikins, so the response becomes second nature.

Infant CPR is taught step by step. The course breaks it down so that you understand exactly where to place your fingers, how deep to compress, how many breaths to give, and how to keep going until help arrives. You will practise until the technique feels natural and you are confident you could do it under pressure.

Burns and scalds are covered because they are one of the most common injuries in homes with young children. You will learn how to cool a burn properly, what not to do, and how to tell when it is serious enough to need hospital treatment.

Febrile convulsions, allergic reactions, meningitis awareness, bleeding, and head injuries are all covered. Everything is taught in plain, everyday language by instructors who understand that you are a parent, not a medical student.

Just three hours

The course lasts three hours and costs £42 per person. You receive a certificate valid for one year, and groups are small at a maximum of 12. You do not need any previous first aid experience.

Three hours is enough to cover all the essential skills without taking a full day out of your life. Most parents tell us afterwards that it was the best three hours they have spent since becoming a parent.

A popular choice for Wilmslow families

We see a lot of Wilmslow families on this course. New parents who want to feel prepared before their baby starts weaning and crawling. Second-time parents who realise they never got around to it the first time. Grandparents who want to feel confident when they are looking after grandchildren, especially when the parenting advice has changed so much since their day.

Groups of friends are welcome, and it is a popular thing to do together. If you are part of a parent group, an NCT network, or just a circle of friends with young children, booking together makes for a supportive and enjoyable experience.

It also makes a genuinely thoughtful gift for expectant parents or new grandparents. Instead of another baby grow or stuffed toy, give the gift of confidence and life-saving knowledge.

Professional paediatric training is separate

If you work with children professionally and need a formal qualification, this is not the right course. We offer Qualsafe Awards accredited paediatric first aid courses for nursery workers, childminders, school staff, and other childcare professionals. Check our Paediatric First Aid page or Emergency Paediatric First Aid page for those options.

The Baby and Toddler First Aid course is purely for your own family. For your own peace of mind. For the knowledge that if something goes wrong, you will know what to do.
