Wilmslow and the surrounding area have a significant number of healthcare and therapy professionals working in private practice. Counsellors, psychotherapists, clinical psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nutritional therapists, and a range of complementary and allied health practitioners all serve the local community from clinics, consulting rooms, and home-based practices across the town.
For many of these professionals, clinical supervision is a requirement of their professional registration. For others, it is recognised as essential best practice. Either way, finding quality supervision training that does not require a full day's travel to Manchester or beyond has not always been easy.
We are PCT Services, and we deliver CPD accredited Clinical Supervision training from our training centre at First Floor, 2 Queen Street in Northwich, about a 30 minute drive from Wilmslow.
The supervision landscape in private practice
If you work in private practice in Wilmslow, your supervision needs depend on your profession and your registration body. Counsellors and psychotherapists registered with the BACP are required to receive regular clinical supervision, and those who want to provide supervision to others need to demonstrate competence in supervisory skills. UKCP registrants have similar requirements. HCPC-registered professionals including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and speech and language therapists are expected to engage in reflective practice and CPD, of which clinical supervision is a recognised component.
But beyond the regulatory requirements, clinical supervision serves a deeper purpose for practitioners working independently. Private practice can be isolating. You make clinical decisions alone. You carry the emotional weight of your clients' experiences without the buffer of a team around you. You do not have a colleague down the corridor to ask for a second opinion or to process a difficult session with.
Clinical supervision provides that space. It is a structured, confidential conversation with a trained supervisor who helps you reflect on your work, explore your clinical decisions, identify blind spots, and develop professionally. It protects both you and your clients.
What our course covers
Our Clinical Supervision course runs over two days and is CPD accredited, with a certificate valid for three years. Groups can be up to 20 people.
The course is designed for healthcare professionals who want to develop the skills to provide clinical supervision, or who want to deepen their understanding of the supervision process to get more from their own supervision experience.
Over the two days, you will explore the theoretical models that underpin clinical supervision. Developmental models that recognise how supervision needs change as a practitioner gains experience. Cyclical models that provide a structured approach to each supervision session. And integrative approaches that draw on multiple frameworks to suit different contexts and disciplines.
The practical skills component is extensive. You will learn how to set up a supervision agreement, how to establish and maintain appropriate boundaries, and how to create a space that feels safe enough for genuine reflection. The course covers active listening at a deeper level than most practitioners are used to, the art of asking questions that open up reflection rather than closing it down, how to give feedback that challenges without threatening, and how to manage the tension between being supportive and being honest.
You will practise running supervision sessions with your peers during the course, receiving structured feedback from both the instructor and the group. This practical component is where the real learning happens, and it is what sets this course apart from simply reading about supervision.
The ethical dimensions are covered thoroughly, including confidentiality in supervision, managing dual relationships, the accountability of the supervisor, what to do when you have concerns about a supervisee's practice, and navigating the boundary between supervision and therapy.
Who attends from the Wilmslow area
We see a broad range of healthcare and therapy professionals from Wilmslow and the surrounding area. Counsellors who want to add supervision to their practice and become an accredited supervisor. Psychotherapists who are working towards advanced registration. Physiotherapists and occupational therapists moving into senior or mentoring roles. Clinical psychologists who supervise trainees and want to develop their supervisory approach. Complementary health practitioners who recognise the value of reflective practice. And experienced practitioners across all disciplines who want to refresh and strengthen their supervision skills.
The multidisciplinary nature of the group is one of the course's strengths. Learning alongside practitioners from different backgrounds broadens your perspective on supervision and exposes you to approaches and challenges you might not encounter within your own discipline.
Building professional connections
One of the benefits that participants regularly mention is the connections they make during the course. Private practice in Wilmslow can feel isolated, and spending two days with other healthcare professionals creates relationships that often continue long after the course ends. Some of our previous attendees have formed peer supervision groups, creating an ongoing source of reflective support that complements their formal one-to-one supervision.
