Mental Health Training for Middlewich's Hospitality and Events Sector

Mental health awareness and MHFA training for Middlewich hospitality and events teams — pubs, restaurants, B&Bs, venues.

14 April 2026

Middlewich comes alive during events season. The Folk and Boat Festival, the FAB Festival, and a calendar of community events draw visitors from across the region and keep the town's hospitality businesses busy throughout the year. Pubs, restaurants, cafes, B&Bs, event venues, and the teams that support them work hard to make Middlewich a welcoming place.

Behind the scenes, the people who work in hospitality and events face a set of pressures that are uniquely challenging for mental health. The hours are long and antisocial. The work is physically demanding. The pace is relentless during busy periods. The pay is often modest. Customer-facing interactions require constant emotional management. And the seasonal nature of events work means income and workload can swing dramatically from quiet weeks to overwhelming ones.

These pressures create an environment where stress, anxiety, burnout, and depression can develop gradually and go unnoticed until they become serious. Mental health training gives hospitality and events teams the awareness and tools to look after each other in a sector where the wellbeing of the workforce is often the last priority.

We are PCT Services, and we deliver accredited mental health training from our training centre at First Floor, 2 Queen Street in Northwich, about a 5 minute drive from Middlewich. We also deliver on-site training at workplaces across the area.

The specific pressures of hospitality and events work

Antisocial hours are the norm. Evenings, weekends, bank holidays, and the summer months when everyone else is enjoying leisure time are the busiest periods for hospitality. Working when your friends and family are socialising leads to social isolation, disrupted relationships, and a lifestyle that makes maintaining healthy routines difficult.

Physical demands are constant. Standing for eight or ten hours, carrying heavy loads, working in hot kitchens, cleaning, setting up and taking down events. The physical toll is real and cumulative, and it contributes to stress and fatigue.

Emotional labour is exhausting. Smiling at customers when you are exhausted, managing complaints graciously, dealing with intoxicated patrons, and maintaining a welcoming demeanour regardless of how you feel requires constant emotional regulation. Over time, this drains people in ways that are not always visible.

Financial instability adds pressure. Tips may be unpredictable, hours may vary, and seasonal work can mean quiet periods with reduced income. Financial worry is one of the strongest drivers of anxiety and depression.

Substance use is more common in hospitality than in most other sectors. Access to alcohol, late-night working patterns, and a culture that sometimes normalises drinking as a way to unwind after a shift can all contribute to problematic substance use, which compounds mental health difficulties.

Two courses for hospitality and events teams

Understanding Mental Health in the Workplace (1 Day)

This is the awareness course for the whole team. It is a Qualsafe Awards accredited Level 2 qualification that covers what mental health is, how conditions like anxiety, depression, and stress affect people at work, and how to have a supportive conversation when you notice someone is struggling.

For a Middlewich pub, restaurant, or events team, putting the whole staff through this course creates a shared understanding that mental health is something the team takes seriously. It normalises conversations about wellbeing and gives everyone the confidence to check in with each other.

It costs £95 plus VAT per person, the certificate is valid for three years, and groups can be up to 16.

This is the in-depth course for managers, supervisors, head chefs, and anyone who takes a leadership role in your team. For a pub landlord, a restaurant manager, or an events coordinator, this course gives you the skills to support team members who are struggling, to have difficult conversations with care and confidence, and to build a team culture where asking for help is seen as strength rather than weakness.

Making training work around hospitality schedules

We understand that hospitality businesses cannot shut down for a training day during a busy period. That is why we work around your schedule.

On-site training can be arranged for quiet days, early mornings before service, or Monday afternoons when many restaurants and cafes are closed or quieter. We come to your venue, use your dining room or function room, and train your team in their own environment.

For individual managers or owners, attending a scheduled course at our Northwich centre is straightforward. It is a 5 minute drive from Middlewich, and we run courses throughout the year.

For events teams that come together seasonally, training can be scheduled during the pre-season build-up, so that your team starts the busy period equipped with the skills and awareness to support each other through the most demanding weeks.

The business impact

Hospitality has one of the highest staff turnover rates of any sector. Recruitment is expensive, training new starters takes time, and losing experienced staff disrupts service quality. Businesses that invest in their team's mental health see better retention, because staff who feel supported and valued stay longer.

Team morale and service quality are directly connected. A team that is stressed, burnt out, and unsupported delivers a different experience from a team that feels looked after. Customers notice the difference, and in a town like Middlewich where hospitality businesses rely on repeat visits and word-of-mouth, the quality of the team's experience directly affects the quality of the customer's experience.
