If you are a parent in Ellesmere Port looking for a baby and toddler first aid course, you might have searched online and found that most options are either in Chester, Liverpool, or further afield. It can feel like you would need to travel a long way and spend a whole day just to learn some basic first aid skills for your little one.

Our Baby and Toddler First Aid course is closer than you think. Our training centre at First Floor, 2 Queen Street in Northwich is about a 25 minute drive from Ellesmere Port, and the course itself is just three hours long. You could drop the kids with a grandparent, drive over, complete the course, and be home before lunch. At £42 per person, it is one of the most accessible and affordable ways to learn skills that could save your child's life.

We are PCT Services, and we have been running first aid courses from our Northwich centre for years, with a 5.0 Google rating and 198 reviews from people across Cheshire who have trained with us.

Why the short drive is worth it

Twenty-five minutes in the car is nothing when you consider what you get in return. Three hours of practical, hands-on training that teaches you exactly what to do when your baby chokes, stops breathing, has a burn, a febrile convulsion, or an allergic reaction. These are not theoretical lectures. You will practise every technique on infant manikins until it feels natural.

Parents who have made the drive from Ellesmere Port tell us the same thing: they wish they had done it sooner. The course is over quickly, the skills are immediately useful, and the confidence they take home is worth far more than the time it took to get there.

What the course covers

The course is designed for parents, grandparents, expectant parents, and anyone who looks after babies and young children. No previous first aid experience is needed.

You learn choking management for infants and young children. The back blows, the chest thrusts, the positioning, and the difference between gagging and choking. This is the skill that brings most parents through the door, especially those who are weaning or about to start.

You learn infant and child CPR. How to check for breathing, how to give rescue breaths to a baby by covering both the nose and mouth, how to do chest compressions with two fingers, and how to sustain the cycle until help arrives. You practise until the movements are automatic.

You learn burns and scalds first aid. The correct cooling technique, what to cover and what not to cover, and when to call for emergency help. With hot drinks, bath water, and kitchen hazards being the most common causes of burns in young children, this is directly relevant to everyday life at home.

You learn about febrile convulsions, the seizures triggered by a rapid rise in temperature that terrify parents who have never seen one. Understanding what is happening and knowing how to keep your child safe during a convulsion transforms panic into manageable calm.

You also cover allergic reactions, meningitis recognition, bleeding, head injuries, and when to call 999 versus managing at home.

Getting to our training centre

Our centre at First Floor, 2 Queen Street in Northwich is easy to reach from Ellesmere Port. Head along the A5117 towards the M56, then follow signs for Northwich. There is parking available nearby, and the centre is in the town centre, easy to find.

If you are coming from the Whitby or Little Sutton side of Ellesmere Port, it is a straightforward drive through the Cheshire countryside. If you are coming from the Stanney Oaks end, the M56 and A556 provide a quick route.

When to book

The best time is during pregnancy, ideally in the third trimester. You and your partner can attend together, learn the skills before the baby arrives, and feel prepared from day one.

If your baby has already arrived, book now. The course is only three hours, so you just need someone to look after the little one for a morning or an afternoon. Many Ellesmere Port parents book when their baby starts weaning, which is when choking anxiety peaks and the motivation to learn is highest.

Grandparents are especially welcome. If your parents or in-laws regularly look after your children, the course gives them the updated skills and techniques they need to feel confident. Things have changed since they had babies of their own, and a refresher is hugely valuable.
