It is a simple question, but most business owners in Knutsford cannot answer it with certainty. Do you have the right first aid provision in your workplace? Is your first aider's certificate still in date? Do you have enough trained people to cover holidays, sickness, and part-time working? Have you actually carried out a first aid needs assessment?

If you hesitated on any of those, you are not alone. First aid compliance is one of those things that sits quietly in the background of running a business until something goes wrong. And then it suddenly becomes the most important thing in the room.

Knutsford is a town full of independent businesses that take pride in doing things properly. Cafes on King Street. Boutiques and galleries. Pubs and restaurants. Dental practices. Salons. Estate agencies. Care homes in the surrounding area. Schools and nurseries. Every one of these businesses has first aid obligations, and meeting them is simpler than most people think.

We are PCT Services, and we deliver accredited first aid training from our training centre at First Floor, 2 Queen Street in Northwich, about a 15 minute drive from Knutsford. We help businesses of all types get their first aid sorted and stay compliant.

A quick self-assessment

Here are the questions every Knutsford business owner should be able to answer yes to.

Have you carried out a first aid needs assessment? This is a legal requirement for every employer. It does not need to be complicated. You look at the risks in your workplace, the number of people you employ, and the nature of your work, and decide what first aid provision you need. If you have never done one, or if your last one was years ago and your business has changed since then, it is time to revisit it.

Do you have at least one trained first aider or appointed person? Every workplace needs someone who can take charge in a first aid emergency. For most Knutsford businesses, that means at least one person trained in Emergency First Aid at Work.

Is their certificate current? First aid certificates are valid for three years. If it has expired, your first aider is no longer legally qualified, and you are no longer compliant. Check the date now.

Do you have cover when your first aider is absent? If your trained person is on holiday, off sick, or working from home, who takes over? If the answer is nobody, you have a gap in your provision.

Do you have a properly stocked first aid kit? Not one that has been sitting in a cupboard since 2019 with used plasters and out-of-date eye wash. A properly stocked, checked, and maintained kit in an accessible location.

If you answered no to any of these, do not panic. Getting compliant is straightforward, and the most important step is training.

The courses that cover your obligations

Getting ahead of the problem

The businesses that never have first aid compliance issues are the ones that plan ahead. They know when their certificates expire. They train more people than the minimum so they always have cover. And they review their first aid needs assessment whenever something changes, whether that is a new employee, a change in premises, or a new activity.

For a small business in Knutsford, this does not need to be a big administrative burden. Train two or three people instead of one. Put the certificate expiry dates in your diary with a three-month reminder. Keep your first aid kit checked and stocked. That is it.

If you want to be really thorough, keep a simple record of any first aid incidents that happen in your workplace. This helps you spot patterns and can be useful evidence that your first aid provision is working if you are ever inspected.
