Every parent has that moment. Your toddler grabs something off the table and shoves it in their mouth. Your baby rolls off the sofa. Your little one pulls a cup of tea towards them. In that split second, you either know what to do or you do not. And the difference could be everything.

Our Baby and Toddler First Aid course exists for exactly this reason. It is three hours of practical, hands on training that teaches parents, grandparents, and anyone who looks after young children the skills to respond to the emergencies that happen at home. Not a formal qualification. Not aimed at professionals. Just essential life-saving knowledge that every family should have.

We are PCT Services, and we run this course regularly at our training centre at First Floor, 2 Queen Street in Northwich, right in the heart of Cheshire. Parents and grandparents come to us from across the county, from Warrington, Chester, and Macclesfield to Crewe, Nantwich, Wilmslow, Knutsford, and everywhere in between.

What you will learn in three hours

The course focuses on the emergencies that are most common and most dangerous for babies and young children.

Choking is the one that worries parents the most, and it is the one you are most likely to face. Babies and toddlers put everything in their mouths, and the choking response in an infant is different from an older child or adult. You will learn the correct technique for clearing a blocked airway in a baby and in a toddler, and you will practise it on specially designed manikins so that the skill is there when you need it.

You will also learn infant and child CPR, because knowing how to keep your child alive until an ambulance arrives is the most important skill any parent can have. The course covers what to do if your baby stops breathing, how to recognise and manage a febrile convulsion, which is one of the most frightening things a parent can witness, how to treat burns and scalds, how to manage allergic reactions, how to recognise the signs of meningitis, and basic wound care for the everyday bumps and scrapes.

Everything is practical. You will leave having actually done these things, not just having heard someone talk about them.

Just £42 and three hours of your time

The course costs £42 per person and lasts three hours. You receive a certificate valid for one year. Groups are kept small at a maximum of 12 people, so there is plenty of time for questions and hands on practice. You do not need any previous first aid experience at all.

We know parents are busy. That is why this course is designed to fit into your day, not take it over. Three hours is enough to cover the essential skills without the commitment of a full day course.

Who books this course?

Parents and grandparents from all over Cheshire. New parents who want to feel prepared before their baby starts crawling and getting into everything. Expectant parents who want to be ready from the moment their baby arrives. Grandparents who look after grandchildren and want to feel confident, especially if it has been decades since they had little ones of their own.

We see a lot of groups booking together. NCT friends from Knutsford, antenatal groups from Warrington, parent and baby groups from Macclesfield, grandparent groups from Nantwich. Learning alongside friends makes the whole experience more relaxed and supportive, and you can talk through the scenarios together afterwards.

Some people book it as a gift for expectant parents. It is one of those presents that is genuinely thoughtful and useful, and most people say afterwards that they wish they had done it sooner.

This is not the same as professional paediatric first aid

It is worth being clear about what this course is and what it is not. If you are a nursery worker, childminder, or anyone who needs a formal paediatric first aid qualification for work, this is not the right course. We run separate Qualsafe Awards accredited courses that meet EYFS and Ofsted requirements, and you can find those on our Paediatric First Aid page and our Emergency Paediatric First Aid page.

The Baby and Toddler First Aid course is for your own knowledge and confidence. It is for the people who love and care for children at home, and who want to know what to do if something goes wrong.
