Becoming a parent changes everything. Suddenly the world is full of hazards you never noticed before. The edge of the coffee table. The grapes you used to eat without thinking. The small batteries in the TV remote. The hot cup of tea you left within reaching distance for half a second. You find yourself watching your baby or toddler like a hawk, knowing that no matter how careful you are, accidents happen.
The good news is that you do not have to live in constant anxiety. You can learn the skills to handle the most common and most serious emergencies that happen with babies and young children. And it takes just three hours.
Our Baby and Toddler First Aid course is designed to give Macclesfield families confidence. Not a formal qualification. Not a stressful exam. Just practical, hands on training that teaches you what to do if your child chokes, stops breathing, has a burn, a convulsion, or any of the other emergencies that parents fear most.
We are PCT Services, and we run this course regularly at our training centre at First Floor, 2 Queen Street in Northwich, about a 25 minute drive from Macclesfield.
Confidence over anxiety
The biggest thing parents tell us after completing this course is not that they learnt specific techniques, although they did. It is that they feel calmer. They feel prepared. The constant low-level worry that sits in the background of every parent's mind, the "what if" that nags at you when your baby starts eating solid food or your toddler starts climbing, that worry does not disappear completely, but it shrinks significantly when you know you have the skills to respond.
That is what this course is really about. Confidence. The confidence to act quickly and correctly if something goes wrong, instead of panicking and freezing.
What the course covers
The course focuses on the emergencies that are most relevant to families with babies and young children.
Choking is always the first thing people want to learn about, and for good reason. It is one of the most common emergencies in the under fives, and the technique for an infant is completely different from an older child. You will learn both and practise them on specially designed manikins until the technique feels natural.
Infant and child CPR is covered in detail. If your baby stops breathing, you need to start CPR immediately. The course teaches you the correct technique for babies and for older children, including compression depth, rate, and the ratio of breaths to compressions.
Febrile convulsions are something that terrifies parents when they happen, but they are manageable if you know what to expect. The course explains what is happening, why it happens, and what to do, which is often about keeping the child safe and staying calm rather than trying to intervene.
Burns and scalds are covered because they are so common in homes with young children. Hot drinks, radiators, bath water, straighteners, oven doors. You will learn how to cool a burn correctly, what not to do, and when to seek medical help.
The course also covers allergic reactions, signs of meningitis, bleeding and wound care, and head injuries. Everything is taught in plain language with no medical jargon.
Three hours, forty two pounds
The course costs £42 per person and lasts three hours. You receive a certificate valid for one year. Groups are small at a maximum of 12, so there is plenty of time for questions and individual practice. You do not need any previous first aid knowledge.

Perfect for Macclesfield parent groups
One of the things we love about this course is how well it works for groups. If you are part of a parent and baby group in Macclesfield, an NCT group, an antenatal class, or just a group of friends who all have young children, booking together makes for a brilliant shared experience. You learn alongside people who understand the same worries, you can discuss the scenarios together, and you leave feeling like you have done something genuinely valuable as a group.
We see grandparents booking together too. Grandparents who look after grandchildren regularly and want to feel confident that they know what to do, especially when things have changed a lot since their own children were small.
And if you are looking for a gift for expectant parents, this is one of the most thoughtful and useful things you can give.
Not a professional course
This course is for personal use. If you are a nursery worker, childminder, or anyone who needs a formal paediatric first aid qualification for work, we run separate accredited courses. Check our Paediatric First Aid page or Emergency Paediatric First Aid page for those.
