If you work in private practice in Macclesfield, whether as a counsellor, psychotherapist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, or any other healthcare professional, clinical supervision is probably already part of your professional life. Most regulatory bodies require it, and even where it is not mandatory, it is widely recognised as essential to safe, reflective, and effective practice.
But finding quality clinical supervision training locally is not always easy. A lot of courses are in Manchester, Liverpool, or London, which means a full day out of your practice just for the travelling. And if you are self-employed, a day away from clients is a day without income.
We are PCT Services, and we deliver CPD accredited Clinical Supervision training from our training centre at First Floor, 2 Queen Street in Northwich, about a 25 minute drive from Macclesfield. Our course is designed for multidisciplinary professionals across all healthcare disciplines, and it is accessible without the need to travel to a big city.
Why clinical supervision matters in private practice
When you work in a team, you have colleagues to bounce ideas off, managers to escalate concerns to, and a shared culture of professional development. When you work in private practice, you often do not have any of that. It can be isolating, and the weight of clinical decision-making sits entirely on your shoulders.
Clinical supervision provides the structured, reflective space that private practitioners need. It is a protected time to step back from the day to day demands of seeing clients and reflect on your practice, explore difficult cases, challenge your assumptions, and develop professionally. Done well, it protects both you and your clients.
For counsellors and psychotherapists registered with the BACP, UKCP, or BABCP, clinical supervision is a professional requirement. You need to demonstrate that you receive regular supervision as a condition of your registration. But even for healthcare professionals where supervision is not formally mandated, the benefits are significant. Better clinical outcomes, reduced risk of burnout, greater professional confidence, and a structured approach to ongoing development.
What our course covers
Our Clinical Supervision course runs over two days and is CPD accredited, with a certificate valid for three years. Groups can be up to 20 people.
The course covers the models and theories that underpin clinical supervision, so you understand the framework you are working within. This includes developmental models, cyclical models, and integrative approaches, giving you a broad understanding of different supervision styles and when to use them.
You will learn the practical skills of effective supervision. How to create a supervision agreement that sets clear expectations. How to establish boundaries and maintain confidentiality. How to ask the right questions that promote genuine reflection rather than surface-level discussion. How to give constructive feedback that supports rather than threatens. And how to manage difficult conversations when a supervisee is struggling or when you disagree on a clinical approach.
There is a strong practical component. You will practise running supervision sessions with your peers and receive structured feedback from the instructor and from the group. This is where the real learning happens, because reading about supervision is one thing, but actually doing it and getting feedback on your approach is what builds competence.
The course also addresses the ethical dimensions of clinical supervision, including managing dual relationships, handling confidentiality breaches, understanding your accountability as a supervisor, and navigating the tension between support and challenge.
Who this course is for in Macclesfield
Macclesfield has a thriving private healthcare and therapy community, and this course is relevant for many of the practitioners working in and around the town.
Counsellors and psychotherapists who need supervision skills as part of their professional registration or who want to offer supervision to less experienced therapists. Physiotherapists and occupational therapists who want to develop their supervisory practice or who are moving into a senior or mentoring role. Speech and language therapists, dieticians, and other allied health professionals. Mental health practitioners working in private or community settings. Clinical psychologists who supervise trainees. And any healthcare professional in Macclesfield who wants to strengthen their reflective practice.
If you are a more experienced practitioner looking to become a clinical supervisor, this course gives you the foundation to do so. If you already provide supervision, it gives you the tools to do it better.
Building a supervision network
One of the benefits of attending the course is the opportunity to connect with other healthcare professionals from across the area. Private practice can be isolating, and the connections you make during a two day course often turn into ongoing professional relationships. Some of our previous course attendees have gone on to form peer supervision groups, which give them regular reflective practice support beyond formal one-to-one supervision.
