Alderley Edge is a small town, but it punches above its weight when it comes to healthcare provision. There are well-established GP surgeries serving the local community, dental practices offering both NHS and private treatment, and a number of specialist clinics and healthcare practitioners operating in and around the village. For every one of these settings, life support training is a fundamental requirement.

The reality of working in primary care is that medical emergencies do not announce themselves. A routine dental check-up turns into a cardiac event. A patient walks into the GP surgery feeling unwell and collapses in the waiting room. An elderly patient at the dental practice has an anaphylactic reaction to an anaesthetic. These are rare events, but when they happen, the response of the team in the room determines the outcome.

We are PCT Services, and we deliver Resuscitation Council UK aligned life support training from our training centre at First Floor, 2 Queen Street in Northwich, about a 25 minute drive from Alderley Edge. We also deliver BLS on site at GP surgeries and dental practices across the area.

BLS for the whole practice team

Every member of staff in a GP surgery or dental practice needs current Basic Life Support certification. That includes the clinicians, the nurses, the dental nurses, the receptionists, the practice manager, and anyone else who works in the building. Because you cannot predict who will be in the room when someone collapses.

Our BLS course is a two hour CPD certified session aligned with CSTF Level 2 standards. It covers adult CPR, AED use, and the recovery position. Groups can be up to 14, which means you can train your entire practice team in a single session.

BLS needs to be refreshed annually. The skills fade quickly without practice, and the Resuscitation Council UK guidelines are updated periodically, so annual refreshers ensure your team is working from the latest evidence base.

For Alderley Edge GP surgeries and dental practices, the most convenient option is often on site delivery. We come to your practice, bring all the equipment, and run the two hour session in your staff room or waiting area. No travel time for your team. No need to close for longer than necessary. We can schedule around your patient appointments, whether that is during a lunchtime closure, at the end of the day, or during a protected learning time slot.

eILS for clinicians

For the clinicians in your Alderley Edge practice, our Immediate Life Support (eILS) course provides the advanced skills that go beyond basic CPR. The course combines online pre-learning with a five hour practical session and covers the ABCDE approach to assessing a deteriorating patient, advanced airway management, recognition of cardiac arrest rhythms, and the skills to lead a resuscitation response until the ambulance arrives.

In a dental setting, the dentist needs to manage medical emergencies that can arise during treatment, often with a patient in a reclined position with restricted airway access. eILS gives dental professionals the structured assessment skills and advanced techniques to manage these situations effectively.

In a GP surgery, the clinical team may be the first to assess a patient who is acutely unwell. eILS provides the systematic approach needed to recognise deterioration early and intervene before the situation becomes a cardiac arrest.

eILS costs £180 per person, the certificate is valid for one year, and groups are a maximum of six.

The recommended approach

The approach that works best for Alderley Edge practices is a layered one. BLS annually for every member of staff, so that everyone in the building can start CPR and use the AED if someone collapses. eILS for the lead clinicians, so that they have the advanced skills to manage deteriorating patients and lead the resuscitation response.

This means that if a patient collapses at the reception desk, the receptionist can start CPR immediately while the dental nurse grabs the AED and someone calls 999. By the time the clinician arrives, the basic response is already underway, and they can take over with advanced assessment and airway management.

These layers work together, and they only work if everyone's training is current.

Compliance matters

Both CQC and GDC expect healthcare teams to maintain current life support training. CQC inspectors check training records at GP surgeries, and the GDC expects dental professionals to demonstrate competence in managing medical emergencies as part of their CPD requirements. Having a clear, documented annual training schedule shows good governance and keeps your practice compliant.

We can help you set up a rolling schedule so that life support training is a fixed part of your practice calendar, not something that gets forgotten until the inspection is announced.
