Alderley Edge is home to a large number of families who rely on nannies, au pairs, and private childcarers to look after their children. Whether it is full-time live-in care, after-school pick-ups, or holiday cover, these childcarers take on an enormous responsibility. They are trusted with the most precious thing in any parent's life, and part of that trust means being prepared to handle an emergency.

If you are a nanny, an au pair, a private childcarer, or a family looking to ensure your childcarer is properly trained, paediatric first aid should be at the top of the list. It is not just about qualifications and compliance, although those matter too. It is about genuine competence. The ability to stay calm and act correctly if a child in your care starts choking, has a seizure, or stops breathing.

We are PCT Services, and we deliver Qualsafe Awards accredited paediatric first aid training from our training centre at First Floor, 2 Queen Street in Northwich, about a 25 minute drive from Alderley Edge.

Why nannies and private childcarers need this training

When a child is in a nursery or school, there are multiple adults around, emergency procedures on the wall, and a designated first aider down the corridor. When a child is with a nanny or private childcarer, that one person is often the only adult in the house. If something goes wrong, there is nobody else to call on. No colleague to take over while you phone for help. No designated first aider to come running.

That is why paediatric first aid training is so important for nannies and private childcarers. It gives you the skills and the confidence to handle an emergency single-handedly, which is exactly the situation you might face.

The emergencies that happen with young children are often sudden and frightening. A baby choking on a piece of food during weaning. A toddler pulling a hot drink off the table. A child having an anaphylactic reaction to something they have eaten. A febrile convulsion that comes out of nowhere. These things happen quickly, and the right response in the first few minutes can make all the difference.

Which course is right?

For nannies and private childcarers in Alderley Edge, we recommend the Emergency Paediatric First Aid course. This is a one day, seven hour course that covers the core paediatric emergencies you are most likely to encounter.

The course covers infant and child CPR, choking management for both babies and older children, dealing with an unconscious but breathing child, burns and scalds, febrile convulsions, allergic reactions and anaphylaxis, bleeding and wound care, head injuries, fractures, and recognising the signs of meningitis.

Everything is practical and hands on. You will practise CPR and choking techniques on infant and child manikins, and work through realistic scenarios so that the skills feel natural rather than theoretical. Our instructors are experienced healthcare professionals who make the training relevant and accessible.

The course costs £75 plus VAT, the certificate is valid for three years, and groups can be up to 12. It is Qualsafe Awards accredited, which means it is a recognised qualification that parents and employers can trust.

For Ofsted-registered nannies

If you are an Ofsted-registered nanny working on the voluntary part of the Childcare Register or the compulsory part for children under eight, you are required to hold a current paediatric first aid qualification. The Emergency Paediatric First Aid course meets this requirement.

If you want the more comprehensive qualification, our full Paediatric First Aid (2 Day) course combines one day of e-learning with one day of practical training and meets full EYFS requirements. It costs £95 plus VAT and covers a broader range of scenarios in greater depth. This is the qualification nurseries need, but it is also available to nannies who want the fullest possible training.

For au pairs

Au pairs in Alderley Edge are often young adults from overseas who may not have any first aid experience. The Emergency Paediatric First Aid course is ideal because it starts from the basics and builds practical skills from scratch. It does not require any prior knowledge, and our instructors are used to working with people from all backgrounds.

If you are a family in Alderley Edge employing an au pair, sending them on this course is one of the best investments you can make. It gives your au pair the confidence to handle an emergency and gives you peace of mind that your children are in safe hands.

A message to Alderley Edge parents

If you employ a nanny, au pair, or childcarer, ask them about their paediatric first aid training. When was their last course? Is their certificate still valid? Do they feel confident dealing with a choking baby or performing infant CPR?

If the answer to any of those questions is not reassuring, book them onto a course. It is a day of their time, and the cost is modest for the skills they gain. Many families in Alderley Edge cover the cost of training as part of the employment arrangement, and it is increasingly seen as a standard part of employing a private childcarer.
