Why Every Northwich Business Needs a First Aid Plan in 2026
Having a solid first aid plan is not just a nice thing to have. If you run a business in Northwich, it is a legal requirement. Whether you run a nursery, a dental practice, a car garage, a cafe, or a larger operation on the Gadbrook Park estate, the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 say you need to make suitable first aid provision for your employees. And honestly, it is one of those things that is easy to put off until something goes wrong.
We are PCT Services, and our training hub is right here in Northwich at 2a Queen Street. We have been delivering accredited first aid training across Cheshire for years, working with everyone from NHS trusts to local independent businesses. We see first hand how much confidence the right training gives people, and how unprepared some workplaces are when an incident actually happens.
What does the law actually require?
Every employer in the UK, no matter how small the business, needs to carry out a first aid needs assessment. This looks at things like the nature of your work, the size of your team, any specific hazards in your workplace, and whether you have got employees who work alone or off site.
Based on that assessment, you will need at least an appointed person to take charge of first aid arrangements. For most workplaces, though, you are going to want trained first aiders on site who can actually respond to an emergency. The difference between having someone who knows what to do and someone who panics can be huge.
So what counts as proper first aid training?
There are two main workplace first aid qualifications that are recognised in the UK.
The first is the Emergency First Aid at Work course, which is a one day course lasting around seven hours. This covers the essentials like dealing with an unresponsive casualty, CPR, choking, bleeding, shock, and minor injuries. For a lot of smaller businesses in Northwich, this is the right starting point.
The second is the full First Aid at Work course, which runs over three days. This goes into much more depth and covers a wider range of injuries and medical emergencies. If your business has higher risks, a larger workforce, or you are based somewhere where emergency services might take longer to arrive, this is the one to go for.
Both courses give your staff a nationally recognised certificate that is valid for three years, and we deliver both of them through Qualsafe Awards accreditation.
Why does this matter for Northwich businesses specifically?
Northwich has a really diverse business community. You have got hairdressers, cafes, and pubs in the town centre, nurseries and schools across the area, GP surgeries and dental practices, care homes and retirement homes, car mechanics and MOT garages, as well as the larger industrial and manufacturing sites out towards Lostock and Winnington. Each of these comes with its own set of risks.
A hairdresser on Witton Street is going to face different hazards to a car garage on the industrial estate. A nursery has different first aid needs to a dental practice. But they all need trained first aiders. They all need someone who can step in confidently if a colleague or customer collapses, burns themselves, or has a serious allergic reaction.
We also find that a lot of Northwich businesses are not aware that their first aid certificates have expired. Certificates last three years, and it is surprisingly easy to lose track. If your team's certificates have lapsed, you are essentially operating without valid first aid cover, which puts you at risk both legally and practically.
What happens if you do not have proper first aid provision?
The Health and Safety Executive can and does inspect workplaces, and not having adequate first aid arrangements is a breach of the regulations. But beyond the legal side, think about what actually happens when someone gets hurt at work and nobody knows what to do. Injuries get worse. People panic. The outcome could have been completely different if someone on the team had the right training.
We have trained thousands of people across Cheshire, and the feedback we hear most often is that people wish they had done it sooner. It is one of those courses where you walk away feeling genuinely more capable and more confident.
Training at our Northwich hub or at your workplace
