A Parent's Guide to Baby and Toddler First Aid in Liverpool

Baby and Toddler First Aid for Liverpool parents, grandparents and carers — three hours, £42, the skills every carer should have.

When you become a parent, the world suddenly feels fuller of risks than you ever noticed before. Every sharp corner, every grape, every bath, every nap. Most of the time, nothing happens. But when something does, you want to be the person who knows what to do, not the person frozen on the phone to 999 hoping the operator can talk you through it.

We are PCT Services, and we run Baby and Toddler First Aid courses for parents, grandparents, and anyone who cares for young children across Liverpool and Merseyside. This is not a professional qualification. It is a three hour, plain English, hands on course designed to give you the practical life-saving skills every parent should have. Our main training centre is at First Floor, 2 Queen Street in Northwich, and we also run sessions on site if you want to get a group of Liverpool friends or family together.

What the course actually covers

We focus on the things that actually happen to babies and toddlers, not rare textbook scenarios.

The big one is choking. Small children put everything in their mouths, and grapes, small toys, hard foods, and bits of plastic are the most common culprits. We teach you exactly what to do if a baby or a toddler is choking, with practice on proper infant and child manikins. There is a different technique for babies under one compared to older children, and you need to know both.

CPR on babies and toddlers is different from adult CPR. The compressions are shallower, the rate is different, and the breaths need a particular technique. We walk you through it step by step and let you practice until it feels natural, not a blur of instructions.

We cover choking, CPR, the recovery position, what to do for an unresponsive baby or child, bleeding and how to control it, burns and scalds (including what to do and what not to do), head injuries and when to worry, febrile convulsions, how to recognise meningitis, and allergic reactions including anaphylaxis.

We also cover the less dramatic but very common stuff. Bumps and falls, nosebleeds, ingested substances, and the kind of everyday panic moments that every parent has had. What is serious, what is not, and when to go to A&E at Alder Hey.

Who is the course for?

This course is not just for new parents. It is for anyone who spends time with babies and toddlers.

New and expectant parents are the most common attendees. A lot of couples book in together before the baby arrives, or in the first few months. It is three hours well spent and genuinely removes a lot of the anxiety around those early weeks and months.

Grandparents often book because they are doing regular childcare for grandchildren. The advice has changed a lot since they last had their own babies, and this course brings them right up to date.

Childminders who want essential skills alongside their formal qualifications, nannies, aunties and uncles, older siblings, and family friends who help out all benefit. If you are going to be left alone with a small child, you should know this stuff.

Why Liverpool parents are booking it

Liverpool is full of young families. The growth in areas like Aigburth, Allerton, Mossley Hill, Woolton, Crosby, and the newer developments around the waterfront has brought a real uplift in demand from parents for practical, accessible courses. And with services like NHS Mersey Care supporting perinatal and infant mental health across the region, we see more and more parents being encouraged to prepare practically as well as emotionally for the early years.

Three hours is achievable. You can do it while the grandparents watch the baby, or book it as a couples session while a friend helps out. It does not require a full day off work.

What makes our course different

We are not just a first aid company. PCT Services trains clinical teams across the North West, including healthcare professionals at Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS, and teams at NHS Mersey Care. We work in partnership with Liverpool City Council on training for their staff. That clinical background means our instructors really understand paediatric emergencies, not just the textbook version.

We also keep the course friendly and judgement free. No one is going to make you feel silly for asking a basic question. There are no stupid questions when the thing on the line is your child.

Group sizes are small, up to 12, and the course is very hands on. You will physically practice CPR, choking response, and the recovery position on proper infant and child manikins. You do not just watch a video.

How and where

The course is three hours long, priced at £42 per person, and certificated through Essential Training with a one year certificate. It is not a formal qualification, it is essential knowledge for parents and carers.

You can attend one of our scheduled Baby and Toddler First Aid courses at First Floor, 2 Queen Street in Northwich. It is a comfortable 45 minute drive from Liverpool, down the M56, and is easy to find in Northwich town centre with parking nearby. We run courses regularly and you can see the live dates on our Baby and Toddler First Aid page.

Alternatively, if you have a group of Liverpool friends or family, say six or more, we can come to you. A lot of parents organise a session between antenatal friends, NCT groups, or family, and we run it in someone's living room, a local church hall, or a community space.
